James P. Butler returned from WWII and was granted a NYS Liquor license in September of 1945. Butler's Liquors was born on the corner of High & Lemon streets in Buffalo's "Fruitbelt". With help and encouragement from NYS Assemblyman William J. Butler (Mark's Grandfather), the Butler family business was on its way. James appeal in a very competitive business was his devotion to his customers, hard work ethic and his interest in the community. After a move to the suburbs in 1970 (Sheridan Plaza, Town of Tonawanda) they opened on the westside of the plaza which was next to the then Marine Midland Bank (later HSBC and now First Niagara). In 1972, it was over to the eastside of the plaza which was at the time next to the old Acme supermarket (currently Sears Hardware). Then, in April of 2012, we made our third move in the Sheridan-Delaware Plaza to our brand new 7,200 sq foot store between Aldi's and Sears.
Mark J. Butler, Proprietor, joined the business in December of 1980 upon graduation from Geneseo State University. He became part owner in 1985 and completed purchase of the business in 1995 upon James's retirement. With a strong sense of dedication and an appreciation of it's loyal neighborhood customer base, Mark is proud to be still there to meet and greet his customers, some of them second and third generations. Butler's has been in business for over 68 years and is a true fixture in the community.
Mark grew up in Kenmore, and went to school locally,(Kenmore West '76 & Geneseo State '80) He joined the Liquor Store in 1980, purchasing the family business in 1995. Mark is married to his wife Jackie and is a father of two, Michael and Madeline. To say he enjoys the business would be an understatement! Mark's avocation is soccer officiating. He is the longtime President of both the local High School and College soccer officials associations. He is also a college assigner and is the NYS coordinator of the National Referee Program for College Soccer.
Our Store Manager, Tom "Bird" Tomaselli, grew up in Kenmore and went to school locally (Kenmore West '76 & Geneseo State). He has been in the liquor business since 1987 as both a sales rep for a local wholesaler and in his current position. Tom's passion is wine. He purchases the high-end wines for the store (after tasting first!), so he can help with recommendations and food pairings. Tom has a large local following and his picks are usually a big hit. Bird enjoys cooking and entertaining at his home in Kenmore that he shares with his Pitt-Bull "Layla".
